How long does it take an ectomorph to build muscle?
Most beginners, ectomorphs included, start to see muscle after 8-16 weeks of consistent, progressive strength training. In the first 2-3 months, muscle size can go up by 5-20%. That's the first visible change. A real transformation takes years, and nobody can honestly promise you a date.
What happens in the first 8-16 weeks?
If you train hard, add weight or reps over time and eat enough, your muscle fibers grow. In 8-16 weeks they can get 10-30% thicker. That's when your shirts start fitting differently.
The catch: it only happens if you show up week after week. Two good weeks and one lost week is how guys stay skinny for years.
Is it slower for an ectomorph?
Some guys have it harder. That doesn't mean you can't.
Hardgainers don't have a fundamentally faster metabolism. Most of the time the real problem is simpler: you're not eating as much as you think. Fix that and "ectomorph" stops being an excuse.
What keeps a skinny guy stuck for years?
- Not knowing how many calories he needs.
- Random workouts with no progression.
- Poor sleep and too much alcohol.
- Quitting every time life gets busy.
How long for a big change, like 10 kg?
Gaining 10 kg (22 lb) cleanly takes 1-2 years. That's not slow. That's what building muscle without piling on fat looks like.
My case
I went from 63 kg to 83 kg (139 to 183 lb), most of it muscle. It took me five years because I was guessing. With a plan, you skip a lot of the years I wasted, but your body still moves at its own pace.
